This exciting new in-person activity will take place in the London Chinese Community Centre at Chinatown as part of Fair organised by Deziremi bookstore for celebrating UK first ESEA heritage month.
Date: Sunday 26 September, 12pm to 5pm (9 slots available to choose, workshop is half hour per session, suitable for children age 6+)
During this half hour workshop, you will able to learn the basic of traditional Chinese woodblock printing and moveable type printing technique, and print 4 different designs to bring home with you!
You will print two classic Chinese poem by using ancient moveable type printing technique invented in China round AD 1040 by Bi Sheng. Bi Sheng's movable type changed how ancient China printed its documents, making printing more efficient and easier. Instead of carving an entire book into one huge block, characters are carved into small clay blocks.
You will also print two traditional design of Chinese woodblock printing from China date to before 220 AD. Initially, woodblock printing was bronze or stone seals molded onto clay and silk with ink rubbed together to inscribe texts. Woodblock printing has been a tremendous help in the spread of knowledge and artistic inspiration. In 762, commercially printed books of medicine, agriculture, calendars, and auspicious charms were sold in the markets of Chang'an, the Tang capital.
